Selection of a First Mathematics Course for Non-Mathematics-Majors

The following table is a guide for students (non-mathematics-majors) selecting a first mathematics course. You should also discuss this decision with your academic advisor.

Previous mathematics courses: Recommended course:
1 year high-school algebra and 1 year high-school geometry Beginning or intermediate algebra at a community college
2 years high-school algebra and 1 year of high-school geometry

Liberal arts majors: Math 1010

Business students: Math 1070

Science/Engineering students: Math 1110 (average of C) or Math 1120 (average of B or above)

2 years high-school algebra and 1 year of high-school geometry, with trigonometry

Liberal arts majors: Math 1010

Business students: Math 1070

Science/Engineering students: Math 1130 (average of C) or Math 1401 (average of B or above)

Students planning to take Math 1070, Math 1110, or Math 1401 must take an Accuplacer placement exam (see Academic Advising Office, NC 1503). Students with transfer or advanced placement credit should see an academic advisor in the Mathematics Department.
