Financial Support for Graduate Mathematics Programs
Teaching Assistantships
Ph.D. students are eligible to apply for teaching assistantships, which
carry a stipend of $13,000 plus tuition. The stipend is increased to $15,000 after the student has passed both preliminary exams. The usual
term of a teaching assistantship is one academic year, with the understanding
that renewal for the second semester depends upon the satisfactory completion
of duties and satisfactory academic progress during the first semester.
T.A. duties consist of teaching one course per semester and/or assisting
in the Mathematics Education Resource Center (MERC) computer lab. Occasionally
other duties may be assigned. Details related to teaching assistantships
are explained in Policies Regarding
Teaching Assistants.
Out-of-state students who are U.S. residents are expected to gain Colorado
residency by the beginning of the second year of study.
Lynn Bateman Teaching Assistantship
This prestigious four-year award is offered to outstanding applicants
to our Ph.D. program. The award includes tuition, fees, and a $17,000
yearly stipend.
See Bateman Awards for criteria,
history and past recipients.
CCM Fellowship
Applications from new graduate students in the area of Computational
Mathematics will be considered for the Center for Computational
Mathematics fellowship. The CCM fellows must be admitted to the PhD
program, receive a Teaching Assistanship from the department at the
time of admission, and have a strong background in Analysis. The
fellowship will add $2000/year on top of the TA stipend and it is
expected to be renewed yearly as long as the student remains a TA,
subject to availability of funds and satisfactory progress. CCM
fellows will be assigned an advisor in Computational Mathematics, must
attend the CCM colloquium, participate in the advisor's research
group, and pass the PhD preliminary examination in Applied Analysis
within the first year in the program. Summer support from the
advisor's research funds and other sources may be also available.
Research Assistantships
Research assistantships are available depending on the contracts and
grants of individual faculty members. Appointments are made and duties assigned
by faculty members with external funding. These appointments are normally
not given to new graduate students. The typical workload for these appointments
is 20 hours per week.
Lynn Bateman Doctoral Fellowship
Each year, the department awards a limited number of fellowships to current doctoral
students based on scholarship and promise of completing the Ph.D. degree.
The duration of the fellowship is one or two semesters. The fellowship provides tuition
and a the same stipend as a teaching assistantship, but without any teaching responsibilities.
The recipient is expected to make significant progress toward the Ph.D.
In general, priority is given to students who have passed both
Preliminary Exams.
See Bateman Awards for fellowship criteria,
history and past recipients.
Lynn Bateman Memorial Teaching Award
The Lynn Bateman Memorial Teaching Award, a cash award of $1,000, has
been established to honor the memory of Lynn Bateman by annually recognizing
and rewarding a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences who,
in the opinion of the faculty of the department, has excelled
in teaching. See Bateman Awards for fellowship criteria,
history and past recipients.
GK-12 Fellowships
Any UC Denver graduate
student (Master's and PhD.) in the biological sciences, chemistry,
environmental science, mathematics, or physics, who will be entering
at least their second year of graduate study is eligible to apply for
a GK-12 Fellowship. This UC Denver National Science Foundation grant
provides eight Fellowships each year for mathematics (4) and science
(4) graduate students to enrich their research and teaching experience
through partnerships with math and science educators in local Middle
Schools. The NSF grant provides each Fellow with a 12-month stipend
of $30,000 and additional funds for graduate tuition and fees up to a
maximum of $10,500 for the year.
