CCM Computing Equipment Overview

Servers

math.cudenver.edu Operating System Fedora Core 2, Dual Opteron 248, 8GB RAM, This system has home file systems and provides email and web services. Avoid running computation intensive applications on this system. For computation or memory intensive applications please use one of the following servers:

  • xmath.cudenver.edu Operating system Redhat Linux 7.1, Dell 2400 Dual Pentum III 1 GHz, 2 GB RAM, This was formerly the math server. Applications available include:
Applix - application suite similar to Office
Splus - A language for data analysis and graphics
R - Free user supported package similar to splus
  • skylla.cudenver.edu Operating system Fedora Core 2, Pentium 4, 2.2 Ghz , 2GB RAM, has matlab and Intel Compiler packages available.
  • kharybdis.cudenver.edu Operating system Fedora Core 2, Pentium 4, 2.2 Ghz , 2GB RAM, has matlab packages available.
  • godzilla.cudenver.edu Operating system Fedora Core 2, Pentium 4, 3.0 Ghz , 4GB RAM, has matlab packages available.
  • beowulf.cudenver.edu Operating system Fedora Core 3, cluster of 36 computers, Dual Pentium III 933 MHz 2GB RAM each, connected by Dolphin supercomputer interconnect. Accounts available on request. See Beowulf Cluster at the CCM
  • mathsun.cudenver.edu Solaris 9.0 SUN Fire server, 6 CPUs, 24GB memory, Matlab, R, GNU and Sun compilers with MPI support.
  • opt4.cudenver.edu Fedora Core 3, Two Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) 275 CPUs, 16GB RAM, Matlab, R, GNU compilers.

File Systems

1. User home directories are common for all servers. Home directories are backed up nightly. The home directories are organized as follows:
/home/faculty math department faculty
/home/grads math department graduate students
/home/students undergraduate students and classes
/home/guests all others

The physical location and amount of disk space is subject to change, but any changes should be completely transparent to users. Please delete unnecessary files - CCM disks are NOT the place to keep digitized holiday pictures or hundreds of MB of Internet loot! We run disk quotas, type "quota" to see your usage. Quotas will be increased upon request.

2. Additional disk space for temporary storage is available in /tmp1 /tmp2 on vader and /scratch on some other machines. Files not changed for 14 days may be deleted automatically. NOTE: Any such disk space outside of users' home directories is NOT BACKED UP and files may DISAPPEAR WITHOUT WARNING ANY TIME! Users should keep valuable files ONLY in their home directories. NOTE: Filling /tmp generally makes a machine unusable, so please be gentle.

Workstations

Computers in the 647 CCM lab allow login directly to most of our servers. There are also several public Windows 2000 machines in the hallway on the south side of the floor, with a scanner and CD burners. The newest one of these, a Dell Optiplex, is equipped with 1 GB of RAM. Software installed on this system includes Ansys (an engineering design and analysis tool) and Cygwin a GNU implementation of Unix running under Windows 2000. There is at least one workstation in each office; some of them work just like the public workstations in 647, some of them have accounts only for the people in the office.

Printers

Location 647 CCM lab

  • xeroxbw a Phaser 5500DN is the default printer. This is a 50 Page per minute, black & white, double sided printer.
  • ccm black and white for two-sided printing, and is a Hewlett Packard 8100dn laserjet.
  • ccmps is the printer for single sided, black and white printing and is a Hewlett Packard 4000dn laserjet.
  • color1 is the newer color printer and is a Xerox Phaser 860DP.
  • color2 is the older color printer and is a Hewlett Packard 4500dn laserjet.
(We prefer that you use the color1 printer when color is required. Please avoid using the color printers unless you need color, as color printing is more expensive)

Location 616 work area
  • statps is the printer for single sided, black and white. It is a Hewlett Packard 4000 laserjet.

PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY TRASPARENCIES INTO ANY OF THE PRINTERS, ESPECIALLY THE COLOR PRINTER, WITHOUT CHECKING WITH THE STAFF FIRST! THEY MAY MELT AND CAUSE DAMAGE EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR

Wireless Networking

We have wireless networking available using 802.11b 11MB/sec technology with good coverage on the sixth floor. This allows secure access to printers and servers and access to the internet for laptop users equipped with wireless cards or capability.

Contact and Support

Please email all requests for support to trouble@math.cudenver.edu, and do not send email to anyone directly. This will assure most prompt attention to your request. The system administrator is Russ Boice, Room 635, 303-556-5394. The CCM Director is Jan Mandel, Room 640, 303-556-4475.
