Iterative Solvers in ANSYS FEM Analysis Software

This  presentation describes the use of iterative solvers within the ANSYS commercial finite element family of software products. The motivation for adding iterative solvers to the original frontal solver designed code is discussed and examples of successful application of iterative solvers to solve industrial problems are given. A proprietary PCG iterative solver is used in ANSYS as the default iterative solver with enhancements for parallel processing and recent memory reductions using element-by-element matrix multiplication techniques. Various additional iterative solvers, including a robust AMG solver which exploits shared memory parallel systems, are used in ANSYS. A powerful domain based iterative solver using the FETI method is also part of the ANSYS iterative solver suite and runs on distributed computer architectures. The implementation of this MPI-based code into the ANSYS code is described and comparisons with other ANSYS direct and iterative solvers is given. Future analysis needs, implementation considerations and hardware architecture expectations are factors that impact the use of iterative solvers in ANSYS and will be discussed in this presentation.
